Relative clauses – Odnosne rečenice sa whom / where / whose

Whom možemo koristiti umesto who kada je objekat glagola:

• My father is a person whom I admire very much. (I admire him)

Takođe, upotrebljavamo predlog (a preposition) + whom (to whom / from whom / with whom …)

• It’s good to have friends with whom you can relax. (you can relax with them)

Whom je formalan izraz ili reč i ne koristi se često u govornom engleskom jeziku. Obično kažemo: 

• a person I admire a lot / a person who/that I admire a lot
• friends you can relax with / friends who/that you can relax with

Where upotrebljavamo u odnosnoj rečenici kada govorimo o mestu/lokaciji:

• My friend recently went back to the town where he grew up. (he grew up there)
• The restaurant where they had lunch was near the bus station.
• Catherine would like to live in a place where there is plenty of sunshine.

Da bismo razumeli odnosne rečenice sa whose proučićemo sledeće primere:

When she was driving home, she saw some people standing by the road. Their car had broken down, so she stopped to help them.

She helped some people whose car had broken down.
(= their car had broken down)

Whose se najčešće koristi za ljude:

• A widower is a man whose wife is dead.
  (his wife is dead)
• She met someone whose sister she went to school with.
  (She went to school with his/her sister)

Uporedite who i whose:

• I met a woman who knows you. (she knows you)
• I met a woman whose sister knows you. (her sister knows you)

the day, the time, the reason…

Možemo reći ‘the day we got married’, ‘the year I was born’, ‘the last time they met’, itd.:

• She can’t meet you on Friday. That’s the day she is going away.
• The last time I saw my mom, she looked amazing.

Možemo upotrebiti reč that:

• The last time that I saw my mom, she looked amazing.

Kažemo ‘the reason I’m calling you’, ‘the reason he didn’t get the job’, itd.

• The reason I’m calling you is to ask for your health.

Takođe, možemo iskoristiti that:

• The reason that I’m calling you … / The reason why I’m calling you …
